Preparing for your 2nd act

Mike was a highly regarded, award-winning copywriter in a very creative advertising agency. He had a successful 25 year career in the industry. But at 50 years of age, he was made redundant. Tim was a very capable IT programmer. He had worked at a number of big name software firms but at 47, he was made redundant. Thirteen years later (at 60), he had never worked in IT again. There are two drivers of change that will affect your career and you have little control over either of them.

“to future-proof your career, you will need to understand and embrace these changes”

One is technological change, the other is your age. Both are inevitable and if ignored, they will impact on your career in some way, shape or form. New technologies like 3D printing, robotics, solar energy etc will impact on businesses over the next 5 to 10 years. Big changes are already affecting healthcare, the taxi industry, finance and heaps more. If you want to future-proof your career, you will need to understand and embrace these changes.

If you’re 40 today, in 10 years, you’ll be 50. Sorry, there’s not much you can do about that one, and at 50 (if not before then), you may start to understand what age discrimination is all about. You may even find yourself out of a job! So what may be a viable well-paid career today may not be in 5 to 10 years’ time.
